Waechter, Berg to be inducted into school's Wall of Fame

 


The Moose Lake Community Schools' Wall of Fame induction ceremony sponsored by First National Bank of Moose Lake will be held at halftime of the boy’s basketball game against Barnum at the Moose Lake High School on Friday, February 22. The varsity basketball game is scheduled to start at approximately 7 p.m.

The inductees of the 2013 class are Dianne Berg and Lawrence Waechter. Berg is a graduate of Moose Lake High School and Waechter is a former teacher. Come celebrate with the families of the inductees at the induction ceremony.

Waechter

Lawrence David Waechter began teaching at Moose Lake High School in the fall of 1965 after graduating from UMD with a degree in secondary math education.

During his tenure, he received a Masters in Physics and Mathematics at St. Cloud University. Dave, as he was known, taught upper level math courses in trigonometry, geometry and algebra.

Waechter was the first coach of the Math League and Knowledge Bowl teams at Moose Lake High School. He was a Math League coach for 25 years and a Knowledge Bowl coach for as many years. He coached the Math League team to the state championship in 1992 and the Knowledge Bowl team to state championships in 2000 and 2001.

Waechter was a mentor to many of his students, helping them develop their skills in and out of the classroom. He served as Junior Class Adviser for 30 years and helped to coordinate numerous magazine sale fundraisers, homecoming ceremonies, and proms.

He was a Firearm Safety Instructor for 20 years. Waechter started the “Pi Day” tradition at Moose Lake High School, which is now celebrated every March 14. During his last year of teaching, he was actively involved in bringing postsecondary math courses to Moose Lake High School through Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College that he also taught. He retired in August 2006 after teaching for 41 years.

Dianne Berg

Dianne Berg graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1982. Berg participated in multiple state tournament teams from 1979-82.

Lawrence David Waechter

During her junior year, she was a member of state championship teams in volleyball and softball. As a senior, Berg helped her teams earn the 1981-82 “Triple Crown” state championships in volleyball, basketball and softball.

Berg earned a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Missouri, where she set many blocking records and was the first volleyball player inducted into the University of Missouri Hall of Fame in 2008.

Berg earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Illinois. She joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an assistant professor in 2001.

Her areas of interest are compulsive sexual behavior, transgender issues and the treatment of sex offenders.
