Moose Lake Area Food Shelf announces its annual fund drive to help feed area families. During March and April, matching funds are available, so all contributions increase the capacity of the food shelf to provide food. Cash donations can be turned into even larger donations because food can be purchased at lower costs through Northern Lights Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations of non-perishable food items are also appreciated.
During 2012, Moose Lake Area Food Shelf served 1,065 individuals, an increase of 25 percent from the previous year. Thirty-eight percent of Food Shelf clients are children, 54 percent adults and 8 percent are ages 65 and older. Over 109,000 pounds of food was distributed to an average 390 families each month. The food shelf serves people in southern Carlton and northern Pine counties.
Moose Lake Area Food Shelf is operated entirely by volunteers. Last year, 47 active volunteers contributed 2,065 hours of service. The food shelf is a United Way agency and has received amazing support from local organizations and individuals.
The food shelf is open each Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Families are offered food for a week. The food shelf is located below Joe Jitters and the Star Gazette in Moose Lake, using the alley entrance.
In addition to weekly food distribution, in 2012 the food shelf also provided extra food for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as a summer food program to help children who don’t have school lunches in the summer.
Free books are provided for children thanks to Alpha Delta Kappa and the Moose Lake Public Library holiday book drive. This past year, Kiwanis, Sonshine Closet and the food shelf also distributed 152 backpacks with school supplies to food shelf children.
Moose Lake Area Food Shelf thanks their partners, donors and volunteers for making food available for area citizens. Their mission is to make sure no one in the area goes hungry.
