Two games into their 2012-13 winter season, the Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team are almost 50 percent to their entire win total from a season ago.
Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team senior defenseman Hannah Dougherty one times it against the Pequot Lakes goalie last Tuesday in the opening game of the winter sports season. The Rebels held on for the 2-1 win thanks to long penalty kill and behind the strong effort of senior goalie K.K. Greene.
Coming off a five-win season last year, the Rebels have had a great start with a 2-1 win over Pequot Lakes on Tuesday followed by a 6-0 win over Minnehaha Academy on Saturday.
Against Pequot Lakes, senior goalie K.K. Greene stopped 29 of 30 shots, and also had several stops when a Rebel player received a five-minute major for boarding, which led to a game ejection.
The Rebels scored first on a shot by sophomore Cheyanne Wilson in the first period. In the third period, the Rebels jumped up to a 2-0 edge after sophomore Karina Cisar’s shot made the net with an assist from senior Hannah Dougherty.
Against Minnehaha, Greene stopped all 18 shots.
Rebel eighth grader defenseman Jessica Bird led the team with three goals. Senior Erin Mollberg, senior Georgia Ryan and eighth grader Sage Gerard also had goals for the Rebels. Assists in the game went to Ryan, Wilson, Hannah Dougherty, Jessica Bird, Mollberg (two), and freshman Mackenzie Louzek.
The goals by Bird and Gerard were the first in varsity uniforms.
The Lady Rebels are off until next Tuesday, when they go up to the Range to face Eveleth-Gilbert.
