Rebels hit, block past Bombers in three games
The Moose Lake-Willow Rebels volleyball team improved to 4-6 in the conference as they hit and blocked past the Bombers in Barnum to take the match played on Parents’ Night, Tuesday, October 16, in three straight games. The game scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Bombers came out on top on serves as they fired seven aces and had only one service error in the match. The Rebels had six aces, but they committed three service errors as Barnum gained a plus three overall on serve.
Both teams struggled throughout the match, committing numerous unforced errors. In the end, the Rebels had one less unforced error (28) than did the Bombers (29).
In the match, which was closer than the game scores showed, it was the Rebels with two more kills than Barnum. While Barnum hung tough with 11 kills, ML-WR had 13 kills.
Game one found the Rebels up on the aces at four with one error while Barnum had two winners with one error. Unforced errors were close at 11-13 in the Rebels' favor. Kills seemed to be the main factor as ML-WR fired five kills and Barnum had only one readily apparent blast.
The second game was a break even on serve at 3-1 for Barnum and 2-0 for ML-WR. The Rebels kept the unforced errors down to nine while the Bombers had 11 unforced errors. Kills actually seemed to be in the Bombers' favor at 5-4.
Game three found the Rebels and the Bombers each being cautious on serve. ML-WR had one service ace and no service errors and Barnum had one each on the aces and errors. The Rebels found it easier going in terms of unforced errors. In the readily apparent kill department, it seemed as though the teams were close, with Barnum actually taking that stat at a plus one with five kills verus ML-WR’s four kills.
ML-WR Head Coach Beckie Jackson took a bit of time to talk after the match. “I believe that was our eighth win overall,” said Jackson. “I think we're 4-6 in the conference. That was a big win for us heading into playoffs. Karina Cisar and Adri Jusczak each had five blocks. Karina had thee aces. Haley Johnson had 20 digs. Joelene Eaton had five kills and Adri had eight kills. Miranda Jacobson had 12 set assists. Andrea Youngberg had nine digs. We’ll be at Aitkin next Wednesday for the first round of playoffs.”
ML-WR (8-18) drew the fifth seed in Section 7AA Sub-section 1 and is set to play the fourth-seeded Gobblers (13-7) on Wednesday, October 24 at 7 p.m. The winner of that match plays the winner of Pine City (#8) vs. Mora (#1) on Friday, October 26 at 6 p.m.
Barnum’s Head Coach Corina Newman provided the following stats: Peyton Bushey, Kelsey Wickstrom and Daron Mainville were each credited with four kills. Lauren Hultgren had 10 set assists and Alexis Kettlehut had four set assists. Wickstrom had three ace serves and nine digs. Sage Miletich was listed with 21 digs, while Hultgren had seven ups and Olivia Angell and MJ Anderson each had five digs. Mainville had three blocks.
Barnum (4-17) drew the fifth seed as well, but in Section 5A East Sub-section, and will play the number four-seeded East Central Eagles (7-11) on Thursday, October 25 at East Central at 7 p.m. The winner of that match plays number one-seeded Braham on Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
