East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity (ECMHFH) Executive Director Wayne Eller will embark on a “Walk the Walk” fundraiser — a 110-mile journey, October 8-13, through cities in East Central Minnesota, all in order to raise funds and awareness for a family in need of safe, decent and affordable housing.
Crystal Powell, her children, and husband lost their home in the historic Willow River flood that occurred earlier this summer. A sign painted on the family’s home by the authorities reads, “Do Not Enter;” the Powell family is now homeless. During the family’s attempt to salvage their belongings as the flood waters rose, Crystal dislodged implanted screws in her previously repaired broken foot, but pressed on despite the pain to save what she could. The next day, she went to work on the re-injured foot. ECM Habitat for Humanity has created the upcoming “Walk the Walk” fundraiser to rebuild Crystal’s and her family’s home.
On Monday, October 8, the “Walk the Walk” fundraiser will start at the ECM Habitat’s Cambridge office at 129 East 2nd Avenue. The route will then travel through Pine City and Hinckley. On October 11, Eller and supporters will arrive at the Willow River Habitat build site, where two Habitat partner families will join the walk. The walk will then continue through Moose Lake and on to Duluth, and will end near the Superior Zoo on Saturday, October 13 or Sunday the 14th.
“As I looked into the precious faces of the family’s little homeless children right after the flood, the words of Habitat’s founder, ‘Shouldn’t everyone have a decent place to lay their head at night?’ inspired me to do something beyond my normal commitments,” explained Eller. “And so, the walk!”
Communities can get involved by donating and/or participating in this cause. To donate, mail tax deductible donations to East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 529, Cambridge MN 55008.
