Snowmobile water-cross races begin season
The Snowmobile Water-Cross event marked the beginning of the season for water-cross racing. June 2, dawned with blue skies and puffy clouds, welcomed all to the racing event.
The local Boy and Girl Scouts presented the colors at the beginning of the day, followed by “The Star Spangled Banner.” The colors presentation was accompanied by a fly-over of miniature airplanes. The next sound was of racing engines, and snowmobiles began their descent into the water. The announcer for the day was Skip Schultz.
During an interview with Dean Weske, the organizer of the event, assurance was given that the water-cross event was environmentally safe. “The Moose Lake Grand Prix has one of the longest ovals we have. Everybody wants to be in Moose Lake.”
Weske spoke further, stating, “A lot of development has come from water-cross events. Snowmobiles are not made to run on 70-degree days. These snowmobiles are sealed tight to prevent water leakage. All the tanks have inner tanks for gasoline. All of the lubricants are biodegradable. The true test of a sled is to run here at Moose Lake. It is the ultimate test of the machine.”
Weske spoke of the safety precautions used. Each snowmobile also has a 20-foot length of rope attached to assist in removing it from the lake in the case of a mishap.
It was certain the crowd gathered at the beach was enjoying the beautiful day and the events unfolding in front of their eyes. There were vendors selling good things to eat, as well as water-cross merchandise such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, and decals.
A beer garden was held at the event. Beer products were furnished by the Moose lake Municipal Liquor Store.
Weske shared that one of the contestants was Mark Maki, 12-time winner of the World Championship. His son, Chad, “The Chop” Maki was also racing. Mark Maki has been honored by recognition in the Snowmobile Hall of Fame.

The Water Cross Grand Prix brings many positive results to the city of Moose Lake: It brings dollars into the city; it brings more people in to shop and enjoy the area; and it brings revenue to the Scouts who collect the aluminum cans from the event and convert them into income for the troops. When the event was over, Weske made sure the entire area was left in the same condition it was found.
